Check your volume button s and press them down a few times to see if they are sticking or seem to be responding incorrectly. By pressing the key s down a few times you might even get them into the proper place and they might start working correctly again. Then you can reboot your phone and make sure everything is working like it should. It sounds like your phone thinks that you are holding the keys down and it thinks that you are trying to do the reset.

As far as colored screens, especially displays that are solid colors with no warning signs or error messages, they are not too common and are not usually very fun to have as they can be hard to fix. As far as taking the battery out of the phone, aka a second level reset, that should be one of your first steps in troubleshooting for any problem that you might come across on your Android smartphone and can solve many of the common issues that your phone might experience.
